Arriving at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing

The crossing (about 15 minutes)

Landing and the ranger orientation (10–15 minutes)
You disembark at the island dock beside the old barracks building. A National Park Service ranger gives a short orientation covering safety, the layout of the island, and the day's program schedule. This talk is worth staying for — it tells you which free ranger walks are running.
The climb to the cellhouse (15–20 minutes)
The road up gains about 130 feet, the equivalent of a 13-story building, on switchbacks. Take it slowly. A shuttle runs for visitors who need it. On the way you pass the ruins of the Warden's House, the lighthouse and the parade ground viewpoints.
Doing Time: the cellhouse audio tour (about 45 minutes)
You collect a headset at the cellhouse entrance and follow a route through Broadway, the dining hall, the library, D Block solitary and the escape cells. After the cellhouse (30–60 minutes)
- The gardens, replanted and maintained by volunteers.
- The Agave Trail and parade ground when open seasonally.

- The dock viewpoint back toward the Golden Gate Bridge.
The return sailing
