Getting there

How to Get to Alcatraz Island

There is exactly one way onto the island: the scheduled ferry from Pier 33.

Alcatraz Island can only be reached by the scheduled passenger ferry from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing in San Francisco. Private boats are not permitted to dock, there is no bridge, no water taxi and no swimming access. So "how to get to Alcatraz" is really two questions: how to get a ferry reservation, and how to get to Pier 33.

Step 1: Reserve a ferry departure

Ferry tickets double as island admission and sell out ahead of time, especially in summer. Booking windows and what the fare includes are on Alcatraz tickets and Alcatraz ferry tickets.

Step 2: Travel to Pier 33

Step 3: Cross the Bay

The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes over roughly 1.25 miles. You disembark at the island dock, where a park ranger gives a short orientation before you climb to the cellhouse. What the crossing is like: Alcatraz boat tour.

Driving and parking

There is no visitor parking at the pier. Nearby garages are expensive and fill early, and The Embarcadero is congested on weekends. If you drive, budget an extra hour. Public transit or a drop-off is the low-stress choice.

Common wrong turns

  • Going to Pier 39 — a different attraction half a mile west.
  • Going to the Ferry Building — a mile south, serves commuter ferries only.
  • Assuming a boat tour that circles the island includes landing — it does not.
  • Planning to buy tickets on arrival at the pier.

Getting around on the island

From the dock, the cellhouse is a steep quarter-mile climb of about 130 vertical feet. A shuttle serves visitors who need it. Paths are paved but uneven in places; wear proper shoes. See visiting Alcatraz and accessibility.
