Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing Guide

What happens between arriving at the terminal and stepping onto the ferry.

Alcatraz Landing is the ferry terminal at Pier 33, and it is the boundary between planning and doing. This page covers the terminal itself — queue layout, boarding procedure, facilities and rules — rather than how to get there, which is on Pier 33 Alcatraz.

Recognising the terminal

Look for the large Alcatraz Landing signage on the bay side of The Embarcadero near Bay Street. The building sits directly on the water with a covered forecourt where departure queues form. Staff in branded jackets direct arrivals by sailing time.

The boarding sequence

  1. Arrive 30 minutes before your posted departure.
  2. Find the queue marker showing your sailing time.
  3. Have your ticket open and ID ready before reaching the gate.
  4. Pass the bag check.
  5. Board via the ramp and choose a deck.
Queues are called by departure time, not arrival order. Being an hour early does not get you on an earlier boat, but being ten minutes late may cost you the visit.

Facilities at Alcatraz Landing

  • Restrooms — the island has limited facilities, so go here.
  • Refreshment counter and gift shop.
  • Covered waiting area, partly open to the wind.
  • Seating is limited; most people stand in the queue.
  • No baggage storage.

Bag rules and security

One small bag per person is the working rule, subject to inspection at the gate. Large suitcases, backpacking packs and oversized coolers will not be accepted, and there is nowhere to leave them. Plan the visit for a day when you are not moving hotels.

Waiting comfortably

The forecourt catches the Bay wind directly. In the summer fog season the wait can feel considerably colder than the walk over. Bring the jacket you would take on the island, not the one you would leave in a bag. See what to bring to Alcatraz.

Returning to Alcatraz Landing

Return ferries dock at the same pier. Disembarking takes a few minutes; from there Fisherman's Wharf is a 15-minute flat walk west and the Embarcadero streetcar stops a block away. Next-step ideas: Alcatraz trip.
